Who the devil made it? Paul Thomas Anderson

Who the hell is in it? Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson

What do we know? It's the first screen adaptation of the work of acclaimed novelist Thomas Pynchon. As with most detective stories, this one is said to have a complicated plot that has alienated some viewers. We're liking the Robert Altman vibe of what we've seen so far, and Martin Short appears to be riffing on the great Henry Gibson.

Who the devil made it? Michael Mann

Who the hell is in it? Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, William Mapother

What do we know? Hemsworth's computer whiz is hired to track down a notorious cyber criminal. Mann needs to get back on form after some recent duds.

The Duke of Burgundy

Who the devil made it? Peter Strickland

Who the hell is in it? Sidse Babett Knudsen, Chiara D'Anna, Monica Swinn

What do we know? After paying tribute to giallo with Berberian Sound Studio, Strickland turns his talents to what appears to be a homage to '70s Rollin-esque Euro softcore.

The Face of an Angel

Who the hell is in it? Kate Beckinsale, Cara Delevingne, Daniel Brühl

What do we know? With names changed for legal reasons, Winterbottom gives us his take on the Amanda Knox story.

White Bird in a Blizzard

Who the devil made it? Gregg Araki

Who the hell is in it? Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Christopher Meloni

What do we know? Green and Woodley are mother and daughter what is apparently a relatively mainstream thriller from the usually controversial Araki.

Mommy

Who the hell is in it? Anne Dorval, Antoine-Olivier Pilon, Suzanne Clément

What do we know? Canada's current auteur of the day Dolan continues his rapid ascent with a story of a single mother, her troubled son, and their mysterious new neighbour.

While We're Young

Who the devil made it? Noah Baumbach

Who the hell is in it? Amanda Seyfried, Adam Driver, Ben Stiller

What do we know? 40-somethings Stiller and Watts attempt to recapture their youth by befriending 20-somethings Seyfried and Adam Driver.

Far From the Madding Crowd

Who the hell is in it? Carey Mulligan, Tom Sturridge, Matthias Schoenaerts

What do we know? Hot off his acclaimed The Hunt, Vinterberg adapts the Thomas Hardy novel.

Clouds of Sils Maria

Who the hell is in it? Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, Chloë Grace Moretz

What do we know? Stewart is the personal assistant to Binoche, an actress about to appear as an elder character in the play that made her famous as a younger woman.

What do we know? Cooper's defence contractor falls for Stone's Airforce pilot.

The Martian

What do we know? Adapted from the novel by Andy Weir, this looks set to be the first of three back to back sci-fi movies from Scott, the others being sequels to Blade Runner and Prometheus.
