TMW's 2015 Movie Preview - Part 2: Horror

2015 is set to be a big year for horror, with a host of sequels to recent hits and remakes of classics due to hit us.

It Follows
Who the devil made it? David Robert Mitchell
Who the hell is in it? Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Jake Weary
What do we know? A twist on the teen horror genre in which teens must sleep around in order to escape the clutches of a demon. Critics were won over when it played at Cannes last year and Monroe (The Guest, The Bling Ring) seems set to be the next big thing.

Eliza Graves
Who the devil made it? Brad Anderson
Who the hell is in it? Kate Beckinsale, Michael Caine, Ben Kingsley, Jim Sturgess
What do we know? Anderson has assembled a quality British cast for this period horror set in a mental institution. May be released under the title Stonehearst Asylum. After turkeys like The Call and Vanishing on 7th Street, Anderson needs to get his career back on track and deliver on the early promise glimpsed in Session 9 and The Machinist.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension
Who the devil made it? Gregory Plotkin
Who the hell is in it? Billy Shepperd, Tyler Craig, Katie Featherston
What do we know? Not a lot. Rumour has it this sequel will be in 3D, which seems odd, given the found footage conceit of the series. Former editor Gregory Plotkin makes his directorial debut and original star Katie Featherston is set for a return to the franchise.

The Green Inferno
Who the devil made it? Eli Roth
Who the hell is in it? Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Aaron Burns
What do we know? Horror's most divisive director, Eli Roth brings us his take on the long stagnant cannibal genre. The press blurb claims the movie was shot in South America using a tribe that had never seen white people before as the cannibalistic natives. Many horror fans wish Roth had ended up boiling in a pot.

Insidious: Chapter 3
Who the devil made it? Leigh Whannell
Who the hell is in it? Dermot Mulroney, Lin Shaye, Stefanie Scott
What do we know? James Wan hands directing duties over to his long-time screenwriting collaborator Leigh Whannell for the third installment in the series. Set before the events of the first movie, this prequel focuses on Lin Shaye's psychic investigator.

Poltergeist
Who the devil made it? Gil Kenan
Who the hell is in it? Sam Rockwell, Jared Harris, Rosemarie DeWitt
What do we know? As with most remakes of much loved genre films, the announcement of a reboot of Tobe Hooper's classic drew audible sighs from horror fans. An impressive cast has been assembled however.

Sinister 2
Who the devil made it? Ciaran Foy
Who the hell is in it? Shannyn Sossamon, James Ransone, Nicholas King
What do we know? Sossamon plays a young mother who moves into the cursed home of the first movie with her twin children. Presumably busy shooting a secret 12 year Boyhood sequel, Ethan Hawke doesn't return for this sequel.

Victor Frankenstein
Who the devil made it? Paul McGuigan
Who the hell is in it? Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy, Jessica Brown Findlay
What do we know? Radcliffe's Igor takes centre stage in this reimagining of Mary Shelley's timeless tale. With Universal rebooting their classic monsters as "pseuperheroes", this Fox production may well win the hearts of horror traditionalists.

Friday the 13th
Who the devil made it? N/A
Who the hell is in it? N/A
What do we know? Despite a release set for November 2015, this is still at the "in development" stage, with a script yet to be finalised and director and cast to be announced. We do know it will be a fresh reboot, as opposed to a sequel to the 2009 remake. Some rumours have suggested the employment of a found footage aesthetic while others have claimed it will be in 3D.

Amityville: The Awakening
Who the devil made it? Franck Khalfoun
Who the hell is in it? Bella Thorne, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kurtwood Smith
What do we know? In a similar plot to Sinister 2, single Mum Jennifer Jason Leigh moves into the cursed house with her three children. Gallic gorehound Franck Khalfoun follows up his Maniac remake with directing duties here.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Who the devil made it? Burr Steers
Who the hell is in it? Lily James, Lena Headey, Sam Riley
What do we know? If Jane Austen were a zombie, she'd no doubt be turning in her grave at the thought of this adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's gimmicky novel. Surely it can't be as bad as Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter?
