We haven’t seen The Mummy on the big screen for the better part of a decade by this point. Even with the more recent cinematic entries of the iconic movie monster have been lacklustre or outright awful, a reverence for a certain 1999 film keeps the premise strong.
Back at the end of last year, we received news that a different take on the Mummy would be coming to the big screen, with the director returning the bandage-wrapped corpse to the horror genre. As we approach the end of this year, however, we’ve learned that yet a fourth film in The Mummy series is already in the works.
The Enduring Appeal of the Mummy
The Mummy has been a staple of the Universal Monsters franchise since 1932, and remains an icon of cinema. For modern audiences, however, it’s 1999’s The Mummy with Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah that continues to be held up as the most beloved movie installment.
The two films in the trilogy that followed and the Scorpion King spin-off certainly offered diminishing returns on the quippy action-adventure of the first. Then came 2017’s much-maligned The Mummy. Its worldwide box office of $410 million doesn’t look bad, but this and its reception killed plans for a new Universal Monsters series.
Where the Mummy then faded from cinemas, it rose again with the increase in popularity of online gaming. Ancient Egypt has long been among the most popular themes here, with the Eye of Horus series being very prominent among video slots. At the time of writing, there was even the new The Golden Mummy competing in the vast library of online slots.
The Mummy of 1999 Getting a Legacy Sequel
It was never going to be long before Hollywood came for the cherished The Mummy from 1999. Seemingly averse to creating anything new or honouring originals in legacy sequels, it likely won’t be of much comfort to existing fans that the team’s getting back together for this one.
In November 2025, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz announced that they’d be reuniting in the fourth instalment. This next entry will come from Radio Silence duo Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, best known for Ready or Not and another legacy sequel in 2022, Scream. A release date isn’t yet known, but a screenplay has been written.
Creeping Back into Horror First
Known for about a year as “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy,” the filmmaker behind Evil Dead Rise has steadily worked his picture through production. Not long ago, in fact, he announced that principal photography was all wrapped up. So, it should be on target for its April 17, 2026, release date, depending on the happenings around its distributor, Warner Bros. Pictures.
However, quite possibly having heard the rumours that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz were coming back for a fourth The Mummy, Cronin and New Line Cinema decided to change the name. Now, fans of horror flicks and this Ancient Egyptian monster will need to be on the lookout for The Resurrected, which will lean into a possession angle for this outing.
While the Mummy has continued to go strongly in other circles, The Resurrected will be its first stumble onto screens for nine years, and might be followed by another in 2027.
