Abel Ferrara's controversial 1992 thriller Bad Lieutenant has spawned an unlikely franchise. In 2009 Werner Herzog gave us Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, and now Takashi Miike (First Love; Blade of the Immortal) takes the series to Japan with Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo.
Miike's film stars Shun Oguri as a Tokyo cop with gambling issues who is drawn into a complex mystery involving the disappearance of a politician's daughter. Lily James plays an FBI agent dispatched to the Japanese capital.
The cast also features Shotaro Mamiya, Liv Morgan, Shūhei Nomura and Hiroshi Tachi.
A release date has yet to be announced with the film premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
