
Having drawn acclaim for his documentary on his father Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus, writer/director Neo Sora makes his narrative feature debut with Japanese-set drama Happyend. The film stars newcomers Hayato Kurihara and Yukito Hidaka as a pair of friends coming to the end of their school lives. When a surveillance system is installed in their school following a prank they played on their principal, the two friends begin to drift apart.
Happyend is in UK/ROI cinemas from September 19th.

In a near-future Tokyo where the threat of a catastrophic earthquake pervades daily life, two rabble-rousing, music-loving best friends Yuta and Kou, played by newcomers Hayato Kurihara and Yukito Hidaka, are about to graduate high school. One night, they pull a prank on their Principal, which has unexpected and far-reaching consequences: a surveillance system is installed in the school. Between the oppressive security system and a darkening national political situation, Kou feels increasingly frustrated with the world while Yuta seems completely unaware.Finding an empathetic ear in a passionate student activist, Kou’s political consciousness blossoms. Assuming that Yuta would never understand his newfound interests, Kou begins to avoid his friend. For the first time in their lifelong friendship, the two are forced to confront differences that they never had to face before.
