A Day In Ramoji Film City

Ramoji Film City is both a film studio centre - arguably the largest in the world - and a tourist attraction. Think of it as the Indian version of Universal Studios in Orlando, but around three times the size.

There are plenty of activities to fill your time with when you visit this venue for a day out. The studio tour itself is certainly the centrepiece, with a vintage open air bus providing the transport as you get to see the sites where countless film stars have made their mark.

Remember that Ramoji is very much a working studio, so you're sure to see locations and facilities you recognise. You might even spot the next big thing: the facility boasts that it has everything needed to make sure a film maker can "walk in with a script and walk out with a film."

There are also plenty of fun movie-related activities. The Ramoji Towers exhibit lets you experience the thrills of earthquakes and free falling without any genuine dangers. The Action Studio lets you experience the fun of using special effects in film making. And Filmi Duniya lets you walk through movie sets including recreations of the streets of Bangkok and Paris.

Kids Park is designed for the young ones, but is likely to be fun for all the family. It includes rides from gently pleasure to full-on thrills, plus an amphitheatre with live performances throughout the day. Braver children will love Borasura, a true adventure experience that incorporates magicians, "molten lava" and dragons.

Nature lovers will be enthralled with Wings-The Bird Park - where you'll see caged and free birds from around the world, including a recreated desert housing ostriches. There's also a dedicated Eco Zone where you can relax in gardens and explore features as diverse as a bonsai collection and a butterfly park. Even if you're not too bothered about horticulture, you have to check out Sanctuary Garden, which is filled with topiary animals, which have been carefully sculpted.

You can also check out three more performance venues, covering global dance, magic and juggling shows, and a display of Wild West-style stunts. Even if you don't find time to attend one of the scheduled performances, you can still share the excitement thanks to live street shows throughout Ramoji Film City and a gloriously elaborate opening and closing ceremony every day. Somehow things get even more lively between April and June when the summer carnival adds more entertainment, including live DJ performances.

As you'd expect, there's a host of restaurants with everything from biryanis to burgers and themes from the movies to medieval times. You can also choose from several shopping outlets for those all-important souvenir gifts.

The park is open from 9am to 5.30pm, so you have plenty of time to get your money's worth. The good news is that although it's on the outskirts of the city, its easy enough to get to on the NH9 highway, while there are several options for getting there and back by public transport, so you don't have to stay locally. All you need to do is find a hotel in Hyderabad and you can begin planning your day at Ramoji Film City right away.
