Finland's Oscar submission for Best International Film is writer/director Markus Lehmusruusu's sci-fi comedy The Squirrel. The film is set in a future devoid of animal life. Miro Lopperi plays Pasi, a designer of synthetic pets who discovers the one remaining animal, a squirrel. The rules say the animal must be destroyed, but the defiant Pasi keeps it alive.
The Squirrel receives its international premiere at Austin's Fantastic Fest on September 20th.

The official synopsis reads:
In the far future, in a sterile world without nature or animals, Pasi, a lonely designer of synthetic pets, unexpectedly discovers the last surviving squirrel. He decides to defy the rules and keep it alive, but things don’t go quite according to plan: the squirrel gets depressed, Pasi falls in love, and his carefully controlled life begins to unravel.
