Back in 2012
we interviewed Alan Ssali Hofmanis, an American who left his home for Uganda. There he met local
filmmaker Isaac Nabwana, who had established his own mini film industry -
Wakaliwood. Using the most basic equipment available, Nabwana and Hofmanis
have made a series of action movies that have played at film festivals
across the globe over the last decade and thrilled action fans with their
exuberance and inventiveness.
Directed by Cathryne Czubek,
Once Upon a Time in Uganda charts the rise of Nabwana and
Hofmanis.
Once Upon A Time in Uganda will screen at Odeon cinemas
across the UK on September 5th, accompanied by a recorded Q&A with
Nabwana.

The official synopsis reads:
Set in the heart of Uganda, two unlikely friends from opposite sides of the world unite over their shared love of Chuck Norris and gonzo 80s action flicks. With sheer determination and an outrageous sense of humour, they team up to create their own explosive movies, catapulting Wakaliwood to international stardom and bringing laughter and joy to millions. This documentary is a wild ride where you can definitely ‘expect the unexpectable’.
