The official synopsis reads:
Based on the play by renowned Portuguese playwright Tiago Gomes Rodrigues and adapted for film by director Tiago Guedes, SADNESS AND JOY IN THE LIFE OF GIRAFFES follows the adventures of Giraffe (Maria Abreu), a quirky 10-year-old girl, tall for her age, addicted to dictionaries and determined to figure out how the world works for a school project. Unable to find the answers at home, she heads out across the city of Lisbon with her big, fat, mildly suicidal teddy bear companion, Judy Garland (Tónan Quito) in search of the only person who can help her on her quest: the prime minister of Portugal. A nationwide economic crisis, the Discovery Channel, a black panther, and the Russian playwright Anton Tchekhov are all part of the heroic journey of this little girl with an enormous problem to solve.
