Originally conceived as a 312 minute long TV miniseries,
Ingmar Bergman's 1982 semi-autobiographical drama
Fanny and Alexander was edited down to 189 minutes for a
theatrical release. That version returns to UK cinemas to celebrate its 40th
anniversary.
Set in early 20th century Sweden, the film stars Bertil Guve as Alexander, a surrogate for a 10-year-old Bergman,
as he experiences a pivotal year in his young life.
Fanny and Alexander is in UK cinemas from December
2nd.

The official synopsis reads:
Drawing heavily on Ingmar Bergman’s own memories, FANNY AND ALEXANDER follows one tumultuous year in the life of the Ekdahl family through the eyes of 10-year-old Alexander (Bertil Guve), whose imagination fuels the magical goings-on leading up to and following the death of his father. It is attuned as ever to the anguish of life but there is much that is fondly recalled, from toy theatres and magic lantern shows to family Christmases and favoured relatives.
