Inspired by historian Judith C Brown's book 'Immodest Acts',
Paul Verhoeven's
Benedetta
is based on the true story of Benedetta Carlini (Virginie Efira), a lesbian nun who believed she
was possessed by a demon. The film sees Benedetta make an enemy of the
Catholic authorities while romancing a young peasant girl (Daphné Patakia).
Charlotte Rampling, Lambert Wilson and
Olivier Rabourdin also star.
Benedetta is in UK/ROI cinemas from April 15th and will
stream exclusively on MUBI UK from July 1st.

The official synopsis reads:
Set in the late 17th century and inspired by true events, a woman joins a convent in Pescia, Tuscany as a plague ravages the land that surrounds it. Capable of performing miracles from an early age, Benedetta becomes entangled in a forbidden lesbian affair that will threaten to shake the Church to its core.
