First look at Guerro's adaptation of J.M. Coetzee's novel.
Following on from his last two films - Embrace of the Serpent and Birds of Passage - Colombian filmmaker Ciro Guerro appears to be completing a trilogy centred around the theme of colonialism with Waiting for the Barbarians.
Adapted from the novel by J.M. Coetzee, the film stars Mark Rylance as a magistrate of a fictional colonial outpost who begins to question his allegiance to the empire when a ruthless Colonel (Johnny Depp) arrives to conduct a report on the behaviour of the native population. Robert Pattinson, Gana Bayarsaikhan and Greta Scacchi also star.
Waiting for the Barbarians is on US VOD in August. A UK/ROI release has yet to be announced.

The official synopsis reads:
The Magistrate (Mark Rylance) of an isolated frontier settlement on the border of an unnamed empire looks forward to an easy retirement until the arrival of Colonel Joll (Johnny Depp), whose task it is to report on the activities of the ‘barbarians’ and on the security situation on the border. Joll conducts a series of ruthless interrogations, which leads the Magistrate to question his loyalty to the empire.
