Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street poster

The 1985 sequel A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge has become a cult classic among queer horror fans in the decades since its release, thanks to its thinly disguised homoerotic subtext.

In the film, actor Mark Patton plays a rare male protagonist in the slasher genre, and whether intentional or not, it's become generally accepted that his character is a repressed homosexual.

A new documentary from directors Roman Chimienti and Tyler Jensen, Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, follows Patton as he reconciles with his role in the film, which practically ended his career.

Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street is in US cinemas from February 27th, with a VOD release on March 3rd.

The official synopsis reads:

Some have called it the gayest horror movie ever made, but for Mark Patton, the star of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge," it was anything but a dream come true. Detailing the homophobia and AIDS-phobia of 1985 as a closeted actor in Hollywood, Mark retraces his obstacles, missteps, and detractors on the pathway to stardom.

Thirty years after the initial release of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, SCREAM, QUEEN! MY NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET sets the records straight about the controversial sequel to A Nightmare on Elm Street, which ended Mark’s acting career, just as it was about to begin. SCREAM, QUEEN! follows Patton as he travels to horror conventions across the U.S. Each new city unwraps a chapter from his life that is met with equal parts joyful and bittersweet detail, as he attempts to make peace with his past and embrace his legacy as cinema’s first male “scream queen.” SCREAM, QUEEN! also finds Patton confronting Freddy’s Revenge cast and crew for the first time, including co-stars Robert Rusler, Kim Myers and Clu Gulager, as well as Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund.
