When we think of Alfred Hitchcock it's usually his elaborate set-pieces that spring to mind, but what makes him such a master of cinema isn't just his ability to fashion a thrilling action sequence, but his mastery of using visual storytelling techniques in his film's quieter moments, shunning dialogue in favour of scene geography and blocking to establish character motivations.

A new video essay by Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin looks at one of the subtler scenes from Hitchcock's 1946 spy thriller Notorious to highlight just how brilliant the director was in employing physical space and the placing of actors within that space.
