A House of Dynamite

A House of Dynamite (cinemas Oct 3rd; Netflix Oct 24th)
Directed by Katherine Bigelow (Point BreakThe Hurt Locker) and written by Noah OppenheimA House of Dynamite is a high stakes thriller that sees a mysterious missile launched against the US. With no idea of its origin, a scramble begins to decide on the appropriate response. The ensemble cast is headed by Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson.



The Smashing Machine

The Smashing Machine (cinemas Oct 3rd)
Having made three films with his brother Josh, Benny Safdie now strikes out on his own as writer/director of The Smashing Machine. The film tells the true story of wrestler/MMA fighter Mark Kerr (Dwayne Johnson), who battled substance abuse to become a legend in his sport.




Good Boy

Good Boy (cinemas Oct 10th)
Not to be confused with the recent Norwegian horror movie of the same name, or the recent Judy Greer-starring horror comedy of the same name, this Good Boy comes from director Ben Leonberg and co-writer Alex Cannon. The film stars the director's pet pooch Indy as a mutt who moves to a new home with his owner Todd. There he becomes spooked by a malevolent presence that seems intent on harming Todd.



Ballad of a Small Player

Ballad of a Small Player (cinemas Oct 17th; Netflix Oct 29th)
Director Edward Berger follows up the Oscar winning All Quiet on the Western Front and Oscar nominated Conclave with Ballad of a Small Player. Written by Rowan Joffe, the film stars Colin Farrell as Lord Doyle, a gambler hiding out in Macau from a private investigator (Tilda Swinton). An encounter with a mysterious casino employee, Dao Ming (Fala Chen), appears to offer Doyle a way to clear his mounting debts.



After the Hunt

After the Hunt (cinemas Oct 17th)
Director Luca Guadagnino (ChallengersBones and All) teams up with writer Nora Garrett for After the Hunt. The film sees Julia Roberts play a college professor who finds herself in an awkward position when one of her colleagues (Andrew Garfield) is accused of sexual assault by a student (Ayo Edibiri).



The Mastermind

The Mastermind (cinemas Oct 24th)
Writer/director Kelly Reichardt (First Cow) takes us back to the 1970s for her heist thriller The MastermindJosh O'Connor plays JB Mooney, a carpenter turned art thief whose life is turned upside down when his plans for a heist go wrong.



Hell House LLC: Lineage

Hell House LLC: Lineage (Shudder Oct 30th)
Writer/director Stephen Cognetti wraps up his excellent found footage saga with Lineage, the fifth and final instalment of the Hell House LLC series. Elizabeth Vermilyea returns to the role of Vanessa Shepherd as a series of mysterious deaths lead her to believe they're connected to the infamous Abaddon Hotel and Carmichael Manor.



Bugonia

Bugonia (cinemas Oct 31st)
Director Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone seem attached at the hip right now. Following their collabs on The FavouritePoor Things and Kinds of Kindness, Lanthimos and Stone have reteamed for Bugonia. Stone plays a CEO who finds herself kidnapped by a pair of men who believe she is an alien with nefarious plans for our planet.



Kontinental '25

Kontinental '25 (cinemas Oct 31st)
Writer/director Radu Jude (Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World) continues to skewer Romanian society in satirical fashion with his latest absurdist comedy. Kontinental '25 stars Eszter Tompa as Orsolya, a bailiff who finds herself consumed with guilt when a homeless man commits suicide following an eviction attempt.
