Masaki Kobayashi’s acclaimed anthology comes to UK blu-ray in April.
Long before Ringu and Ju-On introduced a generation of cinema-goers to the thrills of Japanese horror, director Masaki Kobayashi was terrifying audiences with his 1964 ghost story anthology Kwaidan.
Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, Kwaidan features four nightmarish tales adapted from Lafcadio Hearn’s classic Japanese ghost stories about mortals caught up in forces beyond their comprehension when the supernatural world intervenes in their lives: 'The Black Hair', 'The Woman of the Snow', 'Hoichi the Earless' and 'In a Cup of Tea'.
Kwaidan is set to make its UK blu-ray debut on April 27th when Eureka Entertainment will release the complete 183-minute original Japanese cut from a new 2K restoration.
The Limited Edition set comes with a hardbound case and 100-page collector's book featuring reprints of Lafcadio Hearn’s original ghost stories; a survey of the life and career of Kobayashi by Linda Hoaglund; and the final interview given by Kobatashi.
Bonus features include a discussion of the film by critic Kim Newman; a new video essay by David Cairns and Fiona Watson; and original trailers.
Kwaidan can be pre-ordered from the Eureka Store and Amazon.
