First trailer for the upcoming period romance from the director of Girlhood.
Winner of Best Screenplay and the Queer Palm at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, writer/director Céline Sciamma's period drama Portrait of a Lady on Fire stars Noémie Merlant as a painter hired to paint a secret portrait of a young society woman (Adèle Haenel) who is destined to enter into a loveless marriage. Romance blossoms between painter and subject in this drama set in 1760 France.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire doesn't have a UK/ROI release date yet but you can check out the first trailer below.
The official synopsis reads:
Brittany, France, 1760. Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young lady who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride to be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day and secretly paints her at night. Intimacy and attraction grow between the two women as they share Héloïse’s first and last moments of freedom, all whilst Marianne paints the portrait that will end it all.
"Ekes out a soapy take on the spectacular chicanery, which, true to the duration of the original hoax, goes on a little bit too long to be credible."— 𝕋𝕙𝕖𝕄𝕠𝕧𝕚𝕖𝕎𝕒𝕗𝕗𝕝𝕖𝕣.𝕔𝕠𝕞 🎬 (@themoviewaffler) August 13, 2019
