Eureka bring the prison drama to dual format blu-ray/DVD in August.
Eureka Entertainment have been adding some classics of mid 20th century Hollywood's social drama movement to their Masters of Cinema series lately with the likes of Marty, Inherit the Wind and The Defiant Ones. Next up is John Frankenheimer's 1962 prison drama, Birdman of Alcatraz, previously unavailable on blu-ray in the UK.
Burt Lancaster plays Robert Stroud in this biopic of the convicted killer who became a world famous ornithologist behind bars. The impressive cast also features such greats as Karl Malden, Thelma Ritter, Telly Savalas and Edmond O'Brien.
Eureka's dual format edition will be released on August 6th.
Extras include feature commentary with film historian and editor Paul Seydor, moderated by Twilight Time's Julie Kirgo and Nick Redman; a 29 minute featurette in which cinematographer Richard H. Kline discusses the film; a new video interview with film historian Sheldon Hall; original trailer; and a collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Travis Crawford.

Eureka's synopsis reads:
Burt Lancaster stars as the notorious prisoner, Robert Stroud, sentenced to a life of solitary confinement for murdering a prison guard. When he finds an injured sparrow in the prison yard, Stroud nurses it back to health and discovers a new calling in life. Over the years he becomes a renowned ornithologist, and even a respected author, achieving a greater sense of purpose behind prison walls than many in the outside world will ever know.
