The Chilean drama comes to UK cinemas in March.

The feature debut of director Francisca AlegríaThe Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future stars Mia Maestro as Magdalena, a woman who returns to her village in Chile despite dying several years prior. As her widowed husband and daughter process the shock of her return, strange things begin to occur in the local environment.

Alegría was inspired by a real life incident in 2017 which saw thousands of fish turn up dead in a Chilean river.

"Thinking of those fish, I wondered if they knew that something was wrong before they died," the director says. "I wondered if they felt fear while agonising or if they could see where they were going next. A once magnanimous belief system is falling and reaching the state of agony that Mother Earth has been in for a long time... we are all suffering together now, and I wish that we could be more aware, more empathic, and more willing to listen."

The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future is in UK cinemas from March 24th.
