olla
MUBI UK have announced their June line-up.

MUBI UK's June highlights include actress Ariane Labed's directorial debut, a noir double bill from director Ida LupinoBenedikt Erlingsson’s Icelandic activism drama and works from Lars Von Trier, Federico Fellini and The Marx Brothers.

woman at war

MUBI Spotlight: Woman at War
Environmental issues are at the heart of this dark comedy, in which a middle-aged activist conducts a one-woman war against the aluminium industry threatening to destroy her beloved Icelandic land. However, the film is also a reflection on motherhood: when the protagonist Halla adopts an orphan who changes her life drastically, she is forced to find a balance between her brave but dangerous activism, and taking care of a child.

A Journey Into Indian Cinema
As part of this ongoing series, which started in May and will continue throughout the year, MUBI presents some of the most memorable, pioneering Indian classics. From the likes of renowned auteurs such as Satyajit Ray, Mani Kaul and Saeed Akhtar Mirza, this selection will spotlight the greatest Indian cinema, past and present, from every corner of the country. This month’s new picks are Naseem (Saeed Akhtar Mirza, 1995), and Duvidha (Mani Kaul, 1973), while Our Daily Bread (Mani Kaul, 1970) and The Stranger (Satyajit Ray, 1991) are already streaming on the platform.

The Dead and the Others

New Brazilian Cinema
This summer, MUBI is launching a new extended series dedicated to the best of contemporary Brazilian cinema. In the wake of the country’s recent unprecedented political turmoil, Brazil’s filmmakers continue to output poignant, urgent cinema. The program launches this month with an exclusive presentation of The Dead and the Others (Renée Nader Messora, João Salaviza, 2018), a look at the Krahô people through the eyes of a 15-year-old  resisting his destiny, winner of the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes 2018. The series will also include, amongst other titles, Let It Burn (Maíra Bühler, 2019), Landless (Camila Freitas, 2019), and Breakwater (Cris Lyra, 2019).

Ida Lupino Double Bill
This month, MUBI is spotlighting the brilliant work of Ida Lupino, a pioneering but often overlooked director, as well as actor and producer. Their double-bill is comprised of two films (made in the same year!) that embody her artistic vision and her impact on Hollywood: The Hitch-Hiker (1953) is not only the first major film noir to be directed by a woman, but one of the most daring and chilling exponents of the genre; The Bigamist (1953) is a sharp and sympathetic exploration of a morally ambiguous relationship, starring Lupino herself as one corner of the central romantic triangle.

Portrait of the Artist
Starting in June and continuing throughout the year, MUBI will be launching a series of documentary portraits of the most influential artists of our time. Kicking things off is The Seasons in Quincy: Four Portraits of John Berger (2016): produced by the Derek Jarman Lab, it brings together Tilda Swinton, Colin MacCabe and Christopher Roth in the creation of a moving, honest depiction of English thinker and artist John Berger. Other artists that will be focussed on later in the series will be Ai Weiwei, Vivian Maier and David Lynch.

olla

Brief Encounters: Olla
MUBI will present the exclusive streaming premiere of Ariane Labed’s directorial debut Olla. This dark comedic tale of a Russian mail-order bride relocating to rural France echoes the brilliant strangeness of the Greek Weird Wave.

The New Auteurs: Ms Slavic 7
The latest work from Canadian auteur Sofia Bohdanowicz will again be exclusively featured on MUBI. Co-directed and starring another MUBI regular, Deragh Campbell, Ms Slavic 7 is an introspective, semi-autobiographical look at family histories and artistic legacies.

Viewfinder: Virus Tropical
Turning famous graphic novelist Power Paola's autobiographical work into an animation film, Virus Tropical is a tale of female emancipation in Latin America told through striking black and white animation, selected at the 2018 edition of Berlinale.

The Day After I'm Gone

Debuts: The Day After I'm Gone
A father is forced to reexamine his relationship with his teenage daughter after her failed suicide. Israeli director Nimrod Eldar’s powerful debut feature The Day After I'm Gone delicately meditates on the challenges of fatherhood, adolescence, and generational disunion.

Undiscovered: Just Don't Think I'll Scream
Frank Beauvais' diaristic essay film Just Don't Think I'll Scream is a collage of film excerpts the director watched during a troubled period of his life. A sensation at festivals such as Berlinale and Sheffield Doc/Fest, the film investigates cinephilia as a coping mechanism, as well as an obsession.
