Premiering at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival amid much social and political unrest, Jacques Rivette's adaptation of Denis Diderot's 18th century novel The Nun was subsequently banned in many countries.

Starring French New Wave icon Anna Karina, Rivette's film employs a story of a young woman forced to join a convent as an allegory for freedom of expression and revolutionary zeal.

Newly restored in 4K, The Nun returns to UK cinemas courtesy of Studiocanal on July 27th. On September 17th it will make its UK home entertainment debut when it hits DVD/VOD/blu-ray. The discs will feature a 30 minute documentary on Rivette's film.

The official synopsis reads:

In the XVIII century, Suzanne Simonin (Anna Karina) is locked in a convent against her will. She finds for a while some comfort with the Mother Superior, but then she dies and is replaced by a sadistic woman than cannot stop blaming and punishing Suzanne. The young lady gets the right to move to another convent, however, she remains determined to recover her freedom.
