Waffling With ROOTS Star Brandon Stacy

The versatile actor, whose many credits include The Big Short, Terminator: Genisys and American Horror Story, talks to us about his role in the remake of the classic mini-series Roots.

Tell us about the submission process for Roots? How did that work?

I established a trusted rapport with the casting director and fortunately was called in for a role. During the call-back process, I met with the director, Bruce Beresford, who decided he would like me in a different, larger role.

What intrigued you about playing this character?

To be a part of such a historic story is the most appealing thing about Roots.  My character Clingman is a product of his environment. He does what he thinks is just without really understanding humanity. It’s always intriguing, finding the line between right and wrong, and seeing where the character falls.

What motivates him?

He is a man of strong principals and convictions. A product of the American South, a product of tradition, and a product of War. All these things motivate his actions.

Are you the type of actor that works up a backstory for your characters, even if we don’t actually see that backstory on screen?

Everyone has a past. You can build from that. I think it's important to have an understanding of one’s past when approaching a character. I think it's important to have an understanding of one’s past when approaching a character. It shapes who they are and can ultimately tell you where that character is headed, if following a certain trajectory.

Were you familiar with the original? Did you rewatch it before the shoot?

Of course I had seen the incredibly moving original miniseries. I didn’t watch directly before we shot, but I have re-watched it since.

What do you think are the strengths of Roots?

Roots offers a look at humanity or at the time, the lack thereof. The strength is in knowing the difference. There are incredible strong characters in this mini-series, each with their own journey. It’s quite powerful to be able to teach a new generation an important historical lesson. The past does not always tell us where we are going but it does shape who we are. Hopefully, we can use these truths to make a future we can respect.

Have you seen any of the series yet?

I have only seen only a few clips. I’m very excited to see more next week.

You have a role in the upcoming film Mena. What can you tell us about it?

A DEA agent after famous drug runner, and CIA informant, Barry Seal - Tom Cruise’s character.

And the most important question, did you keep the beard?

I held on to the glorious Roots beard for a while after shooting. Fortunately it comes and goes quite easily. I generally have some sort of facial hair. I’ll let him know he has a fan.
