There may be a full month of releases left to come, but that hasn't stopped Sight & Sound and Cahiers du Cinéma dropping their end of year lists - a top 20 from Sight & Sound and a top 10 from Cahiers. Both publications have rather surprising number ones. In Sight & Sound's case it's Hou Hsiao-Hsien's period epic The Assassin, still to receive a UK release, while the French publication went for Nanni Moretti's Mia Madre, a surprisingly conservative choice by their standards. While both movies received wide critical acclaim, I don't think any of us expected to see either film top such high profile end of year lists.
