SUBTITLE European Film Festival announces 2013 lineup

This November SUBTITLE, Ireland’s newest film festival, will offer audiences a unique opportunity to catch some of the most popular European films, many of which have never been screened theatrically in Ireland. Presenting provocative, funny, accessible and smart European films alongside a roll call of filmmakers and stars, the Festival will make you see cinema in a whole new way.

Speaking about the programme, Artistic Director Richard Cook said: “Many of the brilliant films and TV shows that have captivated us for the last few years have come from Europe – The Killing, Borgen and Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, to name a few. Many of these have also gone on to be remade by Hollywood studios. SUBTITLE gives audiences the chance to see where all this filmmaking talent comes from.”

Featuring popular films from Northern European countries such as Finland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium and Netherlands including Swedish heist movie Easy Money, the Festival has also expanded to screen films from a wider range of European countries, including Spain, France, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bosnia and this year will present a special RESURGENT RUSSIA season, including the hilarious 1950s set musical Hipsters; the adaptation of Sergei Minaev’s bestseller Soulless reflecting modern day Russia; time travel drama We Are From The Future and Irish-directed Russian feature The Weather Station.

Some of the best crime dramas have been coming out of Europe, and the CRIMEWATCH season will present some of the best examples of the genre, including Tobias Lindholm’s tense A Hijacking, Finnish star director Aku Louhimies’ gripping 8-Ball and Oscar nominated Revanche to force audiences to the end of their seats!

Guests for the 2013 Festival include acclaimed Spanish actor Antonio de la Torre (Volver); Russian actor and star of the forthcoming Vampire Academy Danila Kozlovsky; rising star and ‘Golden Calf’ acting award winner Hannah Hoekstra from the Netherlands, and prominent Danish actor Nicolaj Lie Kaas, who starred in The Killing and Susanne Bier’s Brødre (remade as Brothers), with more guests to be announced.

Following successful screenings in 2012, SUBTITLE have introduced a RE:VIEW season – bringing back some of the most popular films for a second look. Featuring Polish historical drama In Darkness, Norwegian comedy thriller Jackpot and crime thriller Headhunters, Danish rom-com Truth About Men and the Swedish drama Pure, audiences will be given a chance to see what they missed in 2012.

The closing night of SUBTITLE will also see the return of the Angela Awards. Hosted by Pauline McLynn the Awards celebrate the achievements of actors, directors, writers, composers and designers from all over Europe.

Festival venues include The Set at Langton’s, the intimate Cleere’s and the much-loved Watergate Theatre, as well as the Cinemobile, which will roll into town for the weekend.
