Listen to the full audio of Welles' notorious broadcast.

On October 30th 1938, The Mercury Theater, under the direction of Orson Welles, made their most infamous broadcast, an adaptation of H.G Wells' 'War of the Worlds'. The play was dramatized as a live news broadcast and was so convincing it caused a nationwide panic across the U.S, with gullible listeners believing their country was genuinely under attack from alien forces. Though he received much criticism for the hoax, it would ultimately make a superstar out of Welles.
