First Look - Star Trek: Into Darkness

Paramount pictures gave The Movie Waffler a special preview of the sequel to J.J Abrams' 'Star Trek' reboot.

We got to see nine minutes of footage from the movie in Cineworld Dublin's brand spanking new IMAX screen.

The footage consisted of two scenes. The first opens in 23rd century London where a couple, Nazneen Contractor and Noel Clarke, are visiting their daughter in hospital. The husband steps outside, visibly distraught, and is approached by a mysterious stranger, Benedict Cumberbatch, who tells him he can help his daughter.
The second scene is set on an "M-Class Planet" with a red weed aesthetic where Kirk (Chris Pine) and McCoy (Karl Urban) are being pursued by natives ala the opening of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'. This sequence looked fantastic on the giant IMAX screen, particularly a shot where the two leap off a cliff. On the planet, a volcano is about to erupt so Spock (Zachary Quinto) heads down with a device to prevent the eruption. He finds himself accidentally plunged into the heart of the volcano which causes a dilemma amongst the crew of the Enterprise. The only way to rescue him is to hover above the volcano which could erupt and consume the spacecraft so Spock insists that they leave him. The final image of the footage screened seems to show Spock being consumed by fire.

'Star Trek: Into Darkness' opens in most countries on May 17th 2013.
