The British coming of age drama dances its way into UK/ROI cinemas in April to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Park Circus have announced a major 20th anniversary rerelease of BAFTA-winning hit movie Billy Elliot in cinemas across the UK, Ireland and selected international territories this April.

First released in 2000, written by Lee Hall and the first film of noted theatre director Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot is a heart-warming tale of an 11-year-old coal miner's son (Jamie Bell) growing up during the miners’ strike in the North of England. His life is forever changed when he stumbles upon Mrs Wilkinson's (Julie Walters) ballet class during his weekly boxing lesson and before long, he finds himself immersed in ballet, demonstrating a raw talent and becoming torn between his unexpected love of dance and the disintegration of his family.

Produced by Greg Brenman and Jon Finn for Working Title Films, Billy Elliot garnered three Oscar nominations (including Best Director) and 13 BAFTA nominations, winning three – including Best British Film.

The film found a new life as the smash hit stage musical, 'Billy Elliot The Musical', with the multiple award-winning creative team from the film, writer Lee Hall, director Stephen Daldry, choreographer Peter Darling, and joined by Elton John, who composed the show’s score. The stage musical has been playing worldwide for 15 years and has won over 80 awards including 10 Tony Awards and five Olivier Awards.

Easily touching on delicate themes such as gender, politics, class and acceptance with charm, humour and heart, seeing Billy Elliot back on the big screen 20 years on will be an unforgettable and truly inspiring experience for audiences.

The film Billy Elliot will screen at cinemas across the UK and selected international territories from April 10th. More info here.
